    Competition for new patients is intense and that is not going to change anytime soon. The population to dentist ratio is changing – in Canada there has been a 23.6% decrease over the last 50 years (ODA 2016).

    Operating at full production is a top priority for most practices. Because of these factors growing a dental practice via effective marketing is now more important than ever.

    Most practice owners do not know how to market their practice effectively including how to develop a market dominating position to attract new patients but just as important is to how use new research to ensure their existing patients are coming in every 6 months.

    Hiring the right people for the practice, who are empowered to act and who understood the practice owners vision is critical.

    Practice owners must be effective and credible communicators, and must have a vision for the future of their practice and their team that makes a true difference.

    Successful practice leaders have a track record of personal success, a reputation for integrity and ethical behaviour, and consistency between their words and their actions.

    How can I improve the profitability of my practice?

    “What you don’t track – you can’t measure. What you don’t measure, you can’t evaluate”.

    Being a great dentist does not ensure financial success. Running a successful and profitable practice requires seeing your practice as a business. Even better is to see yourself as an entrepreneur. Strong business skills and then innovation make for exceptional practices.

    Set standard Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) to measure your practice activity and results.

    Review those KPI’s consistently so you can adjust your operations when necessary.

    Compare your metrics to industry standards, where available.

    Take corrective action when you are not hitting your KPIs.

  • How can I find a balance?

    Dentists often work long hours – managing staff and seeing patients during the day and running their business at night. The critical factor is finding a balance, but even more important is to focus on your unique abilities – the things that you are really good at. Once those are identified, I’ll help you apply your unique abilities toward performing your “highest profit-producing activities.” Those are the activities that generate maximum revenue for your practice. Each of your unique abilities has four distinct characteristics. First, it’s a superior skill. Second, you’re passionate about using this skill. Third, when you’re using this skill, you’re energized by it, and you energize other people around you by using it. And fourth, whenever you’re using this skill, you experience never-ending improvement.

    I believe practice owners should be allowed to serve their passions… and free themselves of the everyday minutiae they hate… and abhor!
